MURUGIAH ARTWORK - COMPASSION LAUNCH EVENT

We were delighted to be invited into the development process of award winning artist, Murugiah’s , commission for this years Refugee Week which is ‘compassion’. 10 of our incredible young people attended a session with Murugiah to creatively and collectively explore what the theme meant to them as a group and individuals. Over the course of the session there were many beautiful conversations had, sharing what compassion meant in different language and cultures before sharing what everyday acts of compassion shape their immediate lives.

A few months after that initial session we were invited as a group to go to the opening at The SouthBank Centre where one of our young people spoke about the process and their involvement in the project. We couldn’t been more proud to see Shanzay doing what she does best and speaking in front of a crowd about important issues, take a look at the photos above to see what an incredible experience this was for everyone!

This theme seems increasingly relevant as we are faced with ongoing global crises and dangerous anti- migration politics, this years theme acts as an invitation to understand the intersectionality of these politics and a realisation of just how interconnected we are. Alongside the theme of Compassion we are asked to explore the #SimpleActs of kindness that ripple into the lives of people we may not even encounter daily in order to make the UK a more friendly place for those seeking sanctuary.

‘Compassion’ will be shown at the Southbank Centre until July 6 and we encourage you to go and have a look for yourself if you have the chance!

We want to thank Choose Love, StudentRebuild, Murugiah and Counterpoints Arts for this amazing opportunity
